PASSPORT TO THE PHILIPPINE POSTCARD DESIGN WINNER FROM
BOLINGBROOK, ILLINOIS.
Chicago, Illinois. The Passport to the Philippines Committee at the Chicago Children’s Museum proudly announces the winner of the 2011 postcard design contest in celebration of the Philippine Independence Week in Chicago on June 9. 11 and 12th at Navy Pier. Jeraldine “Jeri” Millan, 14 years old from Bolingbrook, Illinois took the first prize. Jeri is currently an eight grader at Gregory Middle School in Naperville. She has been involved in arts, music and dance since her early childhood days. Her activities include singing, reading, hip-hop and cultural dancing, and playing the cello in addition to eating, sleeping, facebooking, and online gaming.
Jeri’s winning entry “Passport to the Philippines” will be used in postcard mailing to invite families in celebration of the Philippine Week at the Chicago Children’s Museum. A facsimile of the postcard can be viewed here: http://passporttophilippines.org/PressRelease.aspx.
The Passport to the Philippines Committee will present a series of programs, performances, workshops and exhibits that authentically represents Filipino culture, music, arts and crafts, games, children book reading, taste of the Philippines, including Halo-Halo making demonstrations, and a parade of costumes. Filipino American artists, teachers, students, and volunteers will be on hand to greet and help museum’s visitors with ongoing activities. Participants include students from area schools and colleges, civic groups, music bands and rondalla, martial arts experts, dance and performing arts companies, cultural and historical associations.
The Philippines joined the Passport to the World Program at the Chicago Children’s Museum in June 2008. This is now the 4th year that the Passport to Philippines is held on the 2nd weekend of June to celebrate the Philippine Independence Day on June 12. This year, we will also be having special presentations to commemorate Jose Rizal’s 150 year anniversary. The Philippines was chosen to the Passport series because it represents a sizable ethnic presence and rich historical contributions to the diversity of Chicago neighborhoods.

Press Release - March 1, 2011 Passport to the Philippines 2011 Dates and Postcard Design Contest. Chicago - SAVE THE DATES - 2011 PASSPORT TO THE PHILIPPINES! Enjoy the sights, sounds, and arts of the Philippines and celebrate Philippine Independence Day & Jose Rizal's 150 year anniversary! Thursday, June 9 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM Saturday, June 11 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM Sunday, June 12 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM Passport to the World is a series of celebrations at Chicago Children's Museum. The Museum staff work in collaboration with community representatives in order to develop and present programming that authentically represents the art, culture and traditions of a particular country. This is the 4th year that the Philippines has been invited to participate and become part of this program, The Passport to the Philippines Committee at the Chicago Children’s Museum is sponsoring a postcard design contest for local students. Currently enrolled students, from grades 4 – 12, are eligible to submit an entry form and an original postcard artwork. The aim is to encourage students to express their artistic interpretation of their favorite icons of the Philippines to celebrate Philippine Independence Day and Jose Rizal’s 150 year anniversary. The deadline for submission is March 31, 2011.. Send electronic copy of form and entry in jpg or gif format, with pixel size of at least 400 x 400, to be attached to an email to passport2phils@yahoo.com by March 31. Or, Postal mail entries, postmarked by March 31, to Passport to Philippines c/o Ruben Salazar, 1705 Clemens Road, Darien, IL 60561. The contest requires an original artwork to be used on the front of the postcard with minimum dimensions of 3 ½” x 5”, maximum of 4 ¼” x 6”. The winning postcard design will be used in postcard mailing to invite families in the celebration of the Passport to the World - Philippines at the Chicago Children’s Museum on June 9, 11 and 12, 2011. Three award winners will be chosen by a panel of postcard design committee. Winners will receive gift cards to local merchants as well as a family museum pass (up to eight guests) free admission to the Chicago Children’s Museum.
